The HIIN was honoured to participate in the Blue Economy And Finance Forum #BEFF 2025 in Monaco, held under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and co-organised from Foundation Prince Albert II de Monaco, the Municipality of Monaco, and the Institut océanographique, Fondation Albert Ier, Prince de Monaco, as a Special Event of the 2025 United Nations #OceanConference.
This landmark forum brought together global leaders in finance, policy, philanthropy, and innovation to address the urgent need for sustainable investment in ocean ecosystems and coastal resilience. HIIN attended to bring in insights from #Greece and how the country can contribute to and benefit from the blue transition.
Key Takeaways & Reflections from the Forum:
1. The Ocean as Infrastructure: From Recognition to Regeneration The event underscored that oceans are not merely biodiversity hubs, they are infrastructure essential for #climatestability, #foodsecurity, and #economicdevelopment. It highlighted the importance of integrating oceans into financial systems through science-based, regulated instruments.
2. #NatureBasedSolutions Must Be Front and Centre The recurring theme was the untapped potential of marine ecosystems as cost-effective climate infrastructure. Coral reefs, mangroves, and kelp forests can prevent storm surges, sequester carbon, and restore biodiversity.
3. From Grants to Investment Products: Scaling through #BlendedFinance Senior professionals highlighted the transformative power of catalytic capital and blended finance to bring ocean investments to market, with investment instruments like #bluebonds, recoverable grants, #biodiversitycredits and #resiliencefunds.
4. Multilateral Coalitions Are Forming at Scale The creation of a global coalition of development banks for the ocean and 20 institutions committing to shared standards, data, and investment platforms, and over $7 billion already mobilised, the architecture for ocean finance is taking shape.
5. Greece’s Place in the Blue Transition The HIIN collected useful insights on how the Greece can participate in the Blue Transition with #shippingdecarbonisation, #regenerativetourism #aquaculture, and #oceaninnovation. We are actively engaging investors and partners to ensure the country has a central seat in this global movement, through projects, partnerships and policymaking.
We extend our sincere thanks to the organizers for convening a Forum of both depth and vision.
